Advocacy It’s our job to advocate for you! At the Students' Association of Bow Valley College (SABVC), we are dedicated to empowering students and ensuring their voices are heard. Our advocacy efforts focus on creating an inclusive, equitable, and supportive environment that enables student to thrive. What We Do Representing Your Interests SABVC serves as a bridge between students and college administration, ensuring concerns and feedback are heard. With its student-elected Board of Directors (BOD), SABVC represents student needs to decision-makers, including Bow Valley College (BVC) and government bodies, while collaborating with stakeholders to address issues affecting post-secondary students. Who Represents Me SABVC conducts an annual election where student members elect 9 BOD members to represent their interests. From these elected Directors, 1 President and 1 Vice President are appointed. Together with the SABVC Governance and Advocacy Staff Team, the President and Vice President dedicate all their time working exclusively on advocacy projects and student representation, while the BOD provides its inputs and makes decisions on behalf of our members! Learn more about our Elections SABVC Advocacy Achievements and Initiatives Our advocacy efforts are driven by the needs and concerns of our student community. We are committed to making positive changes on campus and beyond. Below are some of the key initiatives and achievements that showcase how we’re advocating for students and making a difference in their academic and personal lives. Tuition Installment Plan To alleviate financial pressures, SABVC successfully advocated for BVC to offer tuition installment plans, providing students in financial need with a flexible payment option. Sit & Sip Creating meaningful connections, SABVC organized "Sit & Sip" events to facilitate dialogue between students and their leaders, addressing challenges faced by the student community. Graduation with Distinction SABVC is actively working with BVC administration to implement a distinction recognition program, ensuring students’ academic achievements are celebrated similarly to those at other institutions. UPASS Program Through dedicated advocacy efforts, SABVC is working with BVC to secure a transit UPASS program which will offer BVC students the same affordable transit pass available at other post-secondary institutions across Calgary. Campus & Community Safety Advocating for a safer campus and surrounding areas remains a priority for SABVC. A comprehensive report with recommendations was shared with the Downtown Safety Leadership Table to address safety concerns. We continue to lobby for a safer community. Open Educational Resources (OER) OER expansion remains a priority for SABVC. Discussions with BVC are underway to enhance access to these valuable resources for students. Tuition Consultation SABVC launched a dedicated webpage to promote transparency and keep students informed about tuition consultations and updates. Read more Affordable Housing Recognizing the critical need for affordable housing, SABVC continues to push for government action and policy changes to provide relief for students facing the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. International Student Advocacy SABVC closely monitors federal policy changes affecting international students and actively communicates student concerns to Members of Parliament, ensuring their voices are heard and represented on this specific issue. Referendum Together We Decide! A referendum is a means of reaching student consensus on significant proposals or changes which impact membership policies, governance structures, or major organizational decisions. It involves voting by the student body to either approve or reject the proposed changes, ensuring that decisions reflect the collective will of the members. Stay engaged with the decisions that matter! This page features the referendum at the Students' Association of Bow Valley College (SABVC). How to Participate in a Referendum? When a referendum is announced, voting takes place online. We’ll provide all the details you need — including when to vote, how to access the voting platform, and what the referendum is about. SABVC Referendum myVirtualDoctor Referendum | October 2024 Last October 3, 2024 at 9:00 AM to October 7, 2024 at 11:59 PM, we held our MyVirtualDoctor referendum voting. We asked students if this program should be implemented for the next school year (Fall 2025). The results are in, and the program has been approved ! CLUBS Clubs on campus are one of the best ways for you to personalize your college experience. Clubs give you the freedom to pursue an interest/passion with others on campus! Our Programs & Services UPass Thanks to a partnership between Bow Valley College and Calgary Transit, eligible BVC students can now enjoy lower, more affordable transit rates through the UPass program, available during the Fall and Winter terms only. If you need assistance setting up your UPass on the MyFare app, SABVC is happy to guide you through the process. Read more SABVC Bunch Box The SABVC Bunch Box is the new initiative replacing the Grocery Assistance Gift Card program. This program offers fresh and nutritious food boxes available for pickup on select days, allowing us to fight food insecurity on campus with healthy options for students in need. Read more Student Bike Locker Program There is a designated locker in the parkade specifically for students to safely store their bicycles while attending classes. To gain access to the bike locker you must first obtain an access card which can be done by visiting the Learner Success Services (LSS) office. Please note the access card requires a $30 cash deposit, which will be refunded when it is returned at the end of the semester. Each access card is active during the current semester only. Who we are About SABVC Who We Are Established in 1994, the Students’ Association of Bow Valley College (SABVC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the effective representation of Bow Valley College students. We strive to encourage and support Bow Valley College students in order to enhance the overall student experience for the entire campus community. We are currently ratified under the Post-Secondary Learning Act of Alberta (PSLA) in Section 93. We make sure we're on track and come up with new ideas to keep growing and moving forward. The Strategic Plan helps us think long-term, while also giving our elected student leaders a clear direction and the chance to zoom out, focusing on the big picture when setting goals and deciding where to improve. Strategic Plan 2025-2030 SABVC Fees Students' Association Fees For both full time and part time student members. Provides support student clubs, scholarships, and other initiatives. By provincial law, most Bow Valley College students are automatically members of the Students’ Association. Amount per term $63 Health and Dental Plan Fees For full time student members. Covers the Students Association health and dental insurance for its members, both domestic and international, studying full-time in credit programs of 26 weeks or longer. Students with alternate coverage may apply to opt-out. Amount per term: $171- ($85.50 each for Health and Dental Plan) Student Association Virtual Health Care Fee Also known as myVirtualDoctor Fee, this program begins on Fall 2025 term. Covers the Students' Association virtual health care for its members, both domestic and international, studying full-time in credit programs of 26 weeks or longer. Students may apply to opt-out. Amount per year: $41 International ELL Student Medical Insurance Fee For full time ELL International Student. Covers the ELL international students for studying full-time in the international English Language Learning program for no more than three semesters. Required of all full-time international students who do not have proof of medical insurance. $240.25 (subject to change by the insurer) Where are Your SABVC Fees Going Each year, SABVC holds an Annual General Meeting (AGM) to review the budget, which outlines how the fees we collect are allocated.
