The 2025 Board of Directors Election was concluded on March 26, 2025. Meet your 2025-2026 Board of Directors! Visit Board of Directors page About SABVC’s Elections SABVC holds an annual general election to fill 9 positions on the Board of Directors (BOD). The BOD play an important role in advocating for the rights of over 7000 members to the College, community, and all levels of government. Voting FAQs Who is eligible to vote? Any student who pays SABVC fees can vote in the election. Where can I cast my vote? You will receive a unique, one-time link to your MyBVC email to our online voting portal during the voting period. If I have a problem with my voting link, who should I contact? If you have issues with the voting link, please contact the Chief Returning Officer at election@sabvc.ca Where can I access information about the candidates to help me in making an informed decision? After the nomination period, we will be posting the candidates, keep posted. Can I vote in person? No! Voting is all online. How many candidates can I vote for? You will be able to pick up to 9 candidates. When can I vote? Voting for the 2025-2026 election will take place from Mar 25, 2025, 9:00 a.m. – Mar 26, 2025, 3:00 p.m. Why should I vote? Voting is an important part of your student experience! It's not just about choosing student leaders; it's a chance to have a say in decisions that impact your college experience and the overall vibe on campus. Election results will be posted on our website and social media. Who are the Board of Directors (BODs)? SABVC members will get to vote for 9 candidates to be a Board of Directors (BODs). The BODs are elected annually in the winter semester. Their term with SABVC starts in May and ends in April of the following year. Our BODs have the ultimate decision-making authority over most aspects of the Association. This means that our BODs: Represents BVC students’ interests to the College, internal and external stakeholders, all levels of government, and the community Manage SABVC's governance and business Are responsible for the actions of SABVC Make informed decisions that are in the best interests of the Association Are there rules candidates must adhere to during SABVC elections? Yes, please refer to the Election Policy and CRO Policy. If I get elected, when do I start and end my term as a student leader? You will be elected for a one-year term with the following start and end dates: Start date: May 1, 2024 End date: April 30, 2025 What is the mandatory meeting? All-Candidates Meeting: This is an informative session where candidates and their campaign team members learn about the rules and procedures that must be followed during the election period. Any questions you have will be answered here. What if I don’t have enough experience to run in the elections? Luckily, with these roles, you do not need any experience to run. We are looking for students with these qualities: Be ready to learn and continue learning while in office Demonstrate a sincere commitment to the work and your role as a student leader Establish clear goals and ideas for what you aim to achieve if elected Be passionate about the role Have the correct motivations to lead and not be afraid to put in the work Can first-year students run in the election? Certainly! Any student can run for election. As long as you meet the following criteria: Be a full-time or part-time student from September to April Candidates must provide an expected graduation date Be enrolled in at least 1 course in each semester from September to April Present a cumulative 2.00 GPA or higher each semester during the year-term Be an active member of SABVC for the duration of the term for which they are seeking election Attend class(es) at the main downtown Calgary campus Be free of Academic Misconduct, Academic Probation, and BVC Learner Code of Conduct sanctions 1 year prior to the nomination, during the election, and during their elected term Be free of a criminal record Be 18 years of age or older Collect a MINIMUM of 15 signatures from SABVC members that nominate you as a candidate and submit it with your nomination package. If I don’t want to be a student leader, are there other ways to get involved? Absolutely. We want students to find opportunities that fit with their goals and schedule. SABVC is always looking for volunteers. If you’re interested in getting involved, click here. UPass Thanks to a partnership between Bow Valley College and Calgary Transit, eligible BVC students can now enjoy lower, more affordable transit rates through the UPass program. This digital pass gives eligible students unlimited access to Calgary Transit, making it easier and more affordable to get around the city and to campus. If you need assistance setting up your UPass on the MyFare app, SABVC is happy to guide you through the process. Eligibility The UPass is now automatically included for all eligible BVC students, giving you unlimited access to Calgary Transit throughout your term, at a significantly discounted rate . If you meet the following criteria, you’ll be enrolled and billed directly, no extra steps needed: Must have a valid @mybvc email address Must be enrolled full-time in the semester - a minimum full-time credit load of 9 credits. Learners who carry less than 9 credits in a term will be considered part-time. Must be registered in classes and have paid your tuition each term. How to use Calgary Transit - MyFare App: Follow these steps to have your digital UPass Ticket. 01 Confirm Your UPass Registration Log in to your myBVC.ca student account. Go to your Statement of Account and make sure you’ve been billed for the Transit Pass - this confirms your eligibility. 02 Download the myFare App Download and install the Calgary Transit My Fare app from Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iOS) 03 Create your MyID account using @mybvc email Go to Profile, click New Account, sign up with Calgary MyID using your MyBVC email. 04 Get your verification code After entering your MyBVC email, check for a verification code. Once confirmed, return to the My Fare app to sign in. Your UPass will appear in your ticket wallet within 48 hours. If not, refresh your wallet by tapping the button at the top right. Under the terms of the Calgary Transit contract, students may only opt out of the Upass under on of the three following conditions: A. The student is registered exclusively in online classes (see details below)* B. The student is registered in a distance learning program C. The student cannot use Calgary Transit regular or specialized services due to a documented disability and proof of ineligibility Online Course opt- out Criteria To qualify for an opt-out based on online registration, you must be enrolled in all class modalities that begin with “O” (OS, OA, OC, OP, OAS). To confirm your course delivery methods: 1. Log in to MyBVC 2. Under the Registration tab, select My Courses If any of your course modalities include FS, FP, HFX, BAS, BP, BA BS you are not eligible to opt out under the Calgary Transit contract. You can see course modalities here https://www.bowvalleycollege.ca/study/course-delivery-modes Additional Notes International students are not eligible to opt out, as IRCC requirements state that your courses must be 50% on-campus to be PGWP eligible. Each Bunch Box contains up to $50 worth of fresh fruits and vegetables, and you can choose from three different box options to suit your needs. SABVC Health & Dental Plan The student plan for health and dental coverage includes a range of benefits such as prescription drugs, vision and dental care, services from paramedical practitioners, ambulance services, and medical equipment & supplies, among various others. The SABVC Health and Dental Plan is powered by Studentcare, now rebranded as Alumo . This organization has been serving students for decades, making possible the many benefits you enjoy as part of your Health & Dental Plan. Who is automatically enrolled? All domestic, Indigenous, government-sponsored, and international students who meet the following criteria are automatically enrolled in the Student Benefits Plan and do not need to apply for coverage. Students who are members of the SABVC and meet the eligibility criteria are automatically assessed the Health Plan (SHDP-H-SPSU) and Dental Plan (SHDP-D-SPSU) fees on their tuition. Eligibility Requirements: You are admitted to an eligible study career program with full-time status at Bow Valley College; and You reside in Canada and study in person or online; and You are under the age of 70. However, there is up to a 60-day period from the beginning of the term for new enrollments. During this time, you will need to pay out of pocket for all eligible expenses and keep your receipts to submit claims once the validation period is complete. Please wait 60 days from the term start date before registering on the app, as your records will not be available yet. We encourage all SABVC members to attend and participate in our Annual General Meeting (AGM), including those studying part-time, full-time, or online. This year’s AGM will take place on November 25, 2025. View 2025 AGM Results Why should you attend the AGM? As required by SABVC's Bylaws, the AGM is a key meeting where we review our accomplishments, share a financial report for the past year, and present the proposed budget for the upcoming year. With accountability as one of our core values, the AGM is a vital opportunity for SABVC to ensure transparency and hold leadership accountable in the governance of our student association. You will learn about SABVC’s accomplishments over the past year. SABVC’s audited financials are shared. Any recommended bylaw changes are voted on. Any recommended proposed budget are voted on. At the meeting, each member will have the opportunity to cast their vote to approve the proposed budget, enabling SABVC to continue its mission with your valuable support. 2025 AGM Results! SABVC's 2025 AGM was concluded on November 25, 2025, at Bow Valley College’s South Campus (TransAlta Hall). We sincerely thanks all student members who attended and supported the meeting. With your participation, the 2025–2026 Budget has been officially approved. This approval is an important step toward enhancing campus life through improved student support and engagement. There are numerous advantages to being a Student Leader, all of which can positively impact your experience at Bow Valley College. Gain real-world experience in a professional setting. What do I get being a Student Leader? So, are you thinking of running? SABVC Student Leaders consist of 9 Board of Directors members. 9 Board of Directors As members of the Board of Directors (BODs), you will play a crucial role in the Students' Leadership team. Your responsibilities will include advocating for students and contributing to the Association’s decisions related to finance and governance that align with SABVC's goals and objectives. After the elections, will then select the Vice and President of the Board of Directors. SABVC is flexible and we understand your priorities as a student. However, as a student leader, mandatory attendance is required at meetings, which are typically held on alternate Fridays typically from 9:30 am - 11:00 am. Board of Directors are expected to work on average approximately 12-15 hours per month with SABVC. The President is expected to work on average approximately 20 hours per week with SABVC. The Vice President is expected to work on average approximately 16 hours per week with SABVC. Is there any compensation for a student leader position? Yes! This is a paid position! Students who are elected as Student Leaders will get paid a monthly honorarium. We also provide a training program, and SABVC pays for all expenses when traveling for conferences and meetings out of town. How do I know if I'm eligible? Here is what you need to know about the eligibility: Be a full time or part time student from September to April Candidates must provide an expected graduation date Be enrolled in at least 1 course in each semester from September to April Present a cumulative 2.00 GPA or higher each semester during the year-term Be an active member of SABVC for the duration of the term for which they are seeking election Attend class(es) at the main downtown Calgary campus Be free of Academic Misconduct, Academic Probation, and BVC Learner Code of Conduct sanctions 1 year prior to the nomination, during the election, and during their elected term Be free of a criminal record Be 18 years of age or older Collect a MINIMUM of 15 signatures from SABVC members that nominate you as a candidate and submit it with your nomination package. SABVC Club Application information available here. Student Club Application Want to start a club? Want to launch a club and bring people together around a shared interest? We would love it! Clubs are the best way to connect with people who share your passion. Before we get going, the first step is to officially register, or 'ratify,' your club right here with us at SABVC. Here are the 5 simple steps you'll need to follow: 5 Key Steps 01 Envision a new club Plan out the purpose and vision for this new club. What will the goal of your club be? How is it different from existing clubs? What will the club’s name be? 02 Find members & club executives You will need minimum of 5 members and 3 club executives – a President, Vice-President, and Treasurer to start your club. 03 Complete the Student Club Ratification Application Complete the application package and develop a constitution. If you have any questions, feel free to use our SABVC clubs representative as a resource. We strongly recommend that you read the Clubs Policy and Clubs Procedures documents while you are completing the application. 04 Meet with SABVC staff Fill out a club application package and either bring it into to our office or email it to adhingra@sabvc.ca and we will help make sure everything is accurate and that you understand all you need to know to start your club. 05 Await approval from SABVC's Board of Directors Club representatives are welcome to attend the SABVC's Board of Directors meeting where your application will be reviewed for ratification.
