Wire Mesh: Types, Manufacturing Process, and Everyday Applications

Wire mesh is a versatile material made by interlacing, welding, or weaving metal wires into a grid-like pattern. It is widely used across construction, industrial manufacturing, agriculture, architecture, and household applications due to its strength, flexibility, and durability. Depending on the material, wire diameter, and opening size, wire mesh can be engineered to meet specific functional requirements such as filtration, reinforcement, protection, or ventilation.

What Is Wire Mesh?

Wire mesh consists of metal wires arranged in a uniform pattern to form square, rectangular, or diamond-shaped openings. The structure allows air, light, liquids, and sound to pass through while maintaining physical strength. Common materials used in wire mesh include stainless steel, carbon steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, copper, and brass. Each material offers different properties such as corrosion resistance, tensile strength, conductivity, or aesthetic appeal.

Types of Wire Mesh

Wire mesh is categorized based on its manufacturing technique and intended use.

Woven Wire MeshWoven wire mesh is created by weaving wires over and under each other, similar to fabric weaving. This type is commonly used in filtration, sieving, screening, and architectural designs. It offers precise openings and high dimensional accuracy.

Welded Wire MeshWelded wire mesh is manufactured by electrically welding wire intersections together. This results in a strong, rigid structure that maintains its shape under stress. Welded mesh is widely used in construction for concrete reinforcement, fencing, and safety barriers.

The Students' Association of Bow Valley College is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda.

We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Mohkinstsis” which we now call the City of Calgary.

The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.
