June marks National Indigenous History Month—a time to celebrate the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.
June marks National Indigenous History Month—a time to celebrate the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.

We at the Students' Association of Bow Valley College (SABVC) located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, Piikani, Kainai, Tsuut’ina, and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We also acknowledge the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.

This month is an opportunity to reflect on the past, acknowledge the truths of colonization, and commit to reconciliation through learning and action. Indigenous peoples have shaped this land for thousands of years, and their knowledge, languages, and traditions continue to enrich our communities today.

As students, we can engage meaningfully by:

  • Attending local events like powwows, art exhibits, or storytelling circles. Check out the City of Calgary Events Calendar https://www.calgary.ca/events.html for a full list of Indigenous History Month activities happening around the city.

  • Visiting cultural sites such as The Confluence (formerly Fort Calgary) or the Glenbow Museum. You may also want to explore Heritage Park’s National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration https://heritagepark.ca/events/national-indigenous-peoples-day/ Check out their featured events in the park this year.

Let’s take this month to learn, celebrate, and support one another!

We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Mohkinstsis” which we now call the City of Calgary.

The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.
