  • Tax Clinic | SABVC

Tax Clinic Our Newest and Most Requested Program of the Year! Through our partnership with the CRA's Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), SABVC is now prepared for a guaranteed tax clinic service. We have our student-volunteers ready to help you navigate tax season, equipped with the latest CRA guidelines. Why Do Students Need to File a Tax Return? Filing a tax return is important for students, even if they have little or no income. By filing, students can receive any tax refunds they are owed, access benefit and credit payments they may be eligible for, and fulfill their tax obligations. Benefits such as the GST/HST credit can provide valuable financial support based on their income and family situation, read more here . Additionally, students can take advantage of various deductions and credits, including: Tuition, education, and textbook amounts: These can significantly reduce the amount of tax owed. Interest paid on student loans: This can be claimed as a non-refundable tax credit. Canada employment amount: This credit helps cover work-related expenses. Tax Information for International Students studying in Canada International students residing in Canada while enrolled in post-secondary studies may need to file an income tax and benefit return. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is dedicated to helping students understand the Canadian tax system and offers various tools to assist with tax management. Need Help with Filing Your Taxes? SABVC worked hard this year to open up this new program to help our student members ease the burden of filing taxes. We know how important it is to submit taxes on time, and we understand how challenging it can be for newcomers who are unfamiliar with the process. With our trained volunteers offering complimentary tax filing services, we're dedicated to simplifying the process for our student members. Our goal is to ensure that student members have access to the support they need to file their taxes accurately and on time. Take advantage of this valuable resource and make tax season stress-free! You can visit other free community tax clinics such as The Calgary Public Library's tax clinics or pay an organization such as H&R Block. Filling Tax General FAQs What are some common Tax Slips T4 - Employment income T4A* - Pension, retirement annuity, other income (*We cannot process T4A's that include income for Fees for Services [Box 48]) T4A - Scholarships, bursaries T4E - Employment insurance T4A with amount in [Box 48] - With income for Fees for Services [Box 48] T5 - Investment income T5007 - Statement of benefits T5008 - Securities transactions T5013 - Partnership income T5018 - Contract payments T2125 - Business or professional activities T2203 - Provincial and territorial taxes for multiple jurisdictions T3 - Trust income allocations T1204 - Government services contract payments What if I don't have any T4 This also applies to newcomers in Canada who haven't started working yet. You can still file your taxes under "no income." Filing a tax return is important even if you have no income, as it allows you to access various benefits and credits, such as the GST/HST credit and the Canada Child Benefit. Additionally, filing a return helps establish your eligibility for future benefits and ensures that your tax records are up to date with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). If you don't have a T4, you can still file your taxes by reporting "no income" on your tax return. You can also include any other relevant tax slips you may have, such as a T2202 for tuition credits. If you need assistance, you can visit a free tax clinic or use online tax software to help guide you through the process. How can I obtain my T4? Your employer should provide you with your T4 slip, which details all the remuneration paid to you during the calendar year. Employers are required to issue T4 slips by the end of February following the tax year. You can also find all your tax forms and tax information on the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website. By creating an account on the CRA's My Account portal, you can access your T4 and other tax slips using your Social Insurance Number (SIN) or Individual Tax Number (ITN). If you still cannot find your T4 on the CRA website, you should contact your employer to make arrangements for obtaining your T4 form before filing your tax return. It's important to ensure you have all necessary documents to accurately complete your tax return. Where can I find my tuition tax form T2202? You can find your tuition tax forms on the mybvc.ca student portal under *Registration -> *T2022 Tax Receipt. You may also visit the BVC's Office of the Registrar for guidance.

The Students' Association of Bow Valley College is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda.

We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Mohkinstsis” which we now call the City of Calgary.

The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.
